i hauled beams and steel plate and coils for years and i am so happy to still be alive and to have never hurt anyone. i always put a stop chain or 2 across the front end of my loads ,sometimes in the shape of an X if i had to in order to reach each part of the load, like each beam or crate or whatever. i just imagined if i had to stop fast where i would need the resistance of sliding forward. when i hauled coils i chained them down like everyone else then put 2 extra chains pulling down and back thru the center of the coil to prevent it rolling forward. when i hauled slabs of steel or stacks of plate i slid a chain up under the front of the stack and hooked it to one side of my trailer and had it come up on top of the plates in the center of the stack and over and back to the other side of the trailer and tightened it with a ratchet binder. most of my loads were 48,000 to 50,000 lbs and my truck and trailer was 30,000. cars were always cutting in front of me, it was really bad when i was gradually slowing down for a red light and timing it so i could safely stop where i needed to, then 2 or 3 cars would speed around me and park at the red light exactly where my truck and trailer will be resting when i come to a stop. forcing me to save their lives at each and every light while risking my own life, hundreds of times each day i saved thousands of lives every day for 30 years and not a one of those thousands people even knew i saved their life. they never knew they put mine at risk. they never knew they were almost dead. most people who drive cars are clueless.
